Greg Winterhalter is a visual artist residing in Bennington, Vermont. His work has included paintings, drawings, mixed media works and handmade paper compostitions as well as ceramic reliefs. Winterhalter has experimented with all painting mediums. Since 1994 he has worked with wax encaustic (the mixing of color pigments with melted bee's way) on gessoed panels. This method of painting is noted for it's rich color and unlimited textural possibilities. The word encaustic literally means "to burn in." Heat from a variety of sources is used during the painting process fuse the layers of melted wax=pigment together. Winterhalter's art combines the influences of both figurative expressionism and Abstract Expressionism. According to the artist; "my work attempts to juxtapose emotional reaction with image, memory, and medium, resulting in art that is an eclectic combination of the real and imagined." His work has been exhibited in galleries and shows in the northeast. Since 1980, Greg has taught art and humanities at Southern Vermont College.
