"For me, the moose is majestic, remote, powerful," said Joel Rudnick, who is the Master Artist-in-Residence at the Lenox Gallery in the Massachusetts Berkshires. "It speaks to my image of the 'great wild North.' "
An award-winning artist, Rudnick received his initial training as a painter at the Arts Students League of New York. Rudnick was a protege of Shelly Fink and studied with the caricatcurist and painter David Levine on a scholarship at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. He studied sculpture at the National Academy School of Art and design in New York City.
"Whether I conceive of a life-sized figure that reflects the subtleties of moods and emotions, or a small piece that is intimate, allowing the viewer to hold it in his or her hand and experience its tactile qualities, I use my sculpture to explore who we are and what our many needs are in being human," Rudnick said. "I am trying to build on what I believe the early Renaissance was about, adding what awareness I have of psychology, yet keeping in mind that a work of art amounts to nothing if it doesn't excite the viewer initially by its beauty and invite him or her to look closer for its message."
When painting, Rudnick searches for quiet, intimate landscapes that he terms "temples of God". An original painting serves as the inspiration for Rudnick's moose project.
"My painting on the moose is from a painting I created of a marsh landscape, with a hazy moon shining on a waterway, with red flowers circumventing the body of the moose, creating another world seeped in mystery" he said.
Rudnick lives in Williamstown, Mass..
